Since its start in 1992, East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity has worked to build much needed affordable housing in the Slidell area, but more recently, the group has stepped up its game and innovated.

By collaborating with two partners, EST Habitat is also now building and remodeling homes for better energy efficiency and increased storm resistance, and these homes are part of a revitalization wave in the Alton area.

“The cost of building a Habitat house has increased tremendously since we started working here,” said EST Habitat Executive Director Kentrell Jones. “However, people’s incomes have not changed much in that time, and it’s getting harder to build homes people can afford.
