While other city departments are making millions in cuts, Vancouver’s police and fire services expect to be over budget this year by a combined $21 million.
City staff are seeking council’s approval this week to cover the Vancouver Police Department’s $17 million overrun and the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service’s $4.6 million overrun from the city’s reserve fund.
The police department’s shortfall is largely due to unplanned overtime, said VPD Sgt. Steve Addison.
Overtime was needed to cover for staff vacancies, $1.9 million in unbudgeted expenses to police protests during the year, $1.5 million for the Lapu Lapu Festival attack investigation, and $2.2 million for a mid-year adjustment for Canada Pension Plan, Worker’s Compensation and health benefits.
