Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood joins WESH 2 to discuss the growing need for food assistance in his jurisdiction as the government shutdown nears record-breaking status.

Chitwood says nearly 39,000 households in Volusia County depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits that are now cut due to the federal funding lapse.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office, the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, the Daytona International Speedway, Walmart and community donors are partnering to host a contribution collection and donation drive.

Collections will take place Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Daytona International Speedway.

The donation drive will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, beginning at 11 a.m. at Daytona International Speedway.
