Last year, the Round Top Film Festival decided to do something unusual: honor a stunt person. You’d think this would be a common thing, given that they routinely risk their lives to create the big action set pieces that provide the “trailer moments” that draw audiences into theaters and give them some of their most enduring movie memories. But anonymity is part of the gig, necessary to preserve the illusion on screen and, in some cases, the egos of the stars they double in front of the camera. This could explain why it took more than three decades of lobbying by the stunt community, spearheaded by Jack Gill , before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally announced last April that it would honor the craft with a stunt design award, debuting in 2028.
