LINCOLN, Neb. —
Dick Cheney grew up in Wyoming, but the former vice president was born in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Cheney died at the age of 84 due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.
In 2004, Cheney visited Lincoln to support Jeff Fortenberry, then a congressional candidate.
Sylvia Harney, his kindergarten teacher in Lincoln, spoke with sister station KETV about the vice president.
She remembered Cheney as a leader who helped students during a fire drill and consoled other kids who were picked on.
"He would take care of problems, and I just never had to worry," Harney told KETV.
