“Some of the things that came up were surprising”
That was Premier Tony Wakeham’s reaction after reviewing the province’s fiscal situation, but he wouldn’t offer further detail.
Wakeham was responding to questions raised after credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS warned that a balanced budget by 2026-27 may be “difficult to achieve.”
Wakeham says solving the deficit is going to take some time.
“Am I going to be able to solve that deficit in one year? No – it’s going to take a plan. But that’s what I’m committed to doing, making sure that we start identifying exactly where we are, what things are in the forecast, and then we move forward from there,” he told reporters yesterday.
“I’ve had one briefing with the finance officials, so I’m looking forward to a more detailed one.”
