LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and law enforcement have confiscated more than 900 illegally possessed guns as part of Operation Safe Neighborhoods, a statewide initiative focused on reducing gun violence.

Operation Safe Neighborhoods is an initiative that began in March 2023 as part of the Michigan Safe Communities program, where law enforcement officers conduct check-ins with people on parole or probation who cannot legally own a gun.

"Strategic searches and compliance checks" focus on high-risk individuals, such as those who have a history of violent crime.

MDOC currently has approximately 1,000 parole/probation agents supervising 40,500 parolees and probationers throughout the state.
