Ahmad Gardner got the nickname Sauce when he was six years old.

He played for the East Side Bengals youth team in Detroit for Curtez Harris, who had a nickname for all of his players. Gardner was A1, the first letter of his given first name and jersey number.

After a strong performance, Harris complimented his player's efforts with a lengthened version of the nickname: "A1 Sauce Sweet Feet Gardner." Gardner loved the nickname and ran with it, eventually shortening it to Sauce.

Gardner wore a massive "SAUCE" chain over his powder blue suit for when he was selected fourth overall in the 2022 NFL draft.
