KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — It's taken months for a disabled woman to get good news from Social Security about her monthly income and nearly $60,000 in overpayments.
Anne Marie Fugute was relieved when she received a letter and a call from Social Security. She was surprised to hear from Social Security since she had been fighting this battle for months. Questions about the varying amount of her monthly disability check started several years ago. She was notified in 2024 that she owed Social Security over $4,000 in overpayments.
Then two years later, the overpayment amount soared to over $57,000. She didn't know what to do because she couldn't work, and her health had deteriorated recently. Fugute joined the Air Force as a 20-year-old in the early 1980s and says she had no physical problems
