More than 6,000 residents across the region have called 211 seeking assistance since the federal government shutdown began, according to the United Way of Greater Chattanooga .

Calls to the United Way’s 211 hotline have nearly doubled in the last week and a half, with most requests centered around food assistance.

United Way leaders say about 34,000 people in Hamilton County rely on funding for SNAP benefits, and the organization serves a 15-county region.

The increase in calls reflects growing concern as families struggle to meet basic needs.

"Anything from food to housing to child care, any kind of social service, you can call 211 and talk to somebody who will help you find that,” said Abby Garrison, United Way Vice President of Community Investments.
