LANCASTER, Wis. (WKOW) — As winter approaches, the Grant County Highway Department is updating its road maintenance practices.

These changes aim to enhance public safety and improve the efficiency of winter road operations, according to a press release.

The department will increase the use of brine solutions to pre-treat roads before winter weather events. This method prevents snow and ice from bonding to the pavement, allowing plow crews to clear roads more quickly and effectively during storms.

Traditional salt use will be reduced, with a focus on critical areas like hills, curves, and intersections. The department will also emphasize mechanical removal methods, such as plowing, to maintain safe travel conditions.
