TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - In a letter to the state, the Pima County Board of Supervisors is requesting local control of short-term rentals.

The state took control of STRs from counties, cities, and towns in 2017.

District 3 Supervisor Jennifer Allen said since then, short-term rentals have caused issues in certain communities.

“Companies will move in and buy up available housing stock, convert them into short-term rentals,” Allen said. “That has a huge impact on the availability of housing.”

She said the problem is that outside entities come in and buy properties.

“That money doesn’t stay here,” said Allen. “It also drives down the supply of affordable housing, available housing, and it increases the cost of housing.”
