Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield was leading the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. Tuesday in early results in the race to determine Detroit's first new mayor in more than a decade, capitalizing on a large fundraising lead and a Detroit News-WDIV-TV (Channel 4) poll that showed her as the clear favorite.
With 3% of the vote in, Sheffield, a three-term council member, was ahead with 75% of the vote to 25% for Kinloch, the senior pastor at Triumph Church and a first-time candidate for elected office. They are competing to replace longtime Mayor Mike Duggan, who announced late last year that he wouldn't seek a fourth term and is running as an independent for governor in 2026.
