NEW YORK, NY (LOOTPRESS) – Zohran Mamdani has won the election for New York City mayor, according to projections, defeating independent former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani, 34, a democratic socialist and state assemblymember, achieved a stunning victory after beginning the race as a long-shot candidate.

Polling at just 18% in March, he gained momentum in the final weeks and went on to win the Democratic primary with 43.8% of the vote.

His campaign focused on affordability, calling for fast and free public buses, universal child care, and a rent freeze for stabilized housing units.
