Uncapped opener Jake Weatherald was named on Wednesday in Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test against England, with Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott included as back-up fast bowlers.
Young opener Sam Konstas has been dropped as Marnus Labuschagne returns, with selectors including the veteran batter in a 15-man group for the first cricket test against England.
Should the 31-year-old Weatherald pad up against Ben Stokes’s side, he will be the sixth opening partner for Usman Khawaja since David Warner retired early last year.
Previous experiments with Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne did not pan out.
