Donald Trump has publicly criticized Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate in New York City’s mayoral election, calling him a "Jew hater." In a post on social media, Trump stated that any Jewish voter supporting Mamdani is "stupid." This remark came on the day of the election, which has seen a record number of early voters, with 151,212 ballots cast by Sunday, according to the NYC Board of Elections. Polls are scheduled to close at 9 p.m. ET. In his post, Trump wrote, "Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!" He also expressed skepticism about providing federal funding if Mamdani wins, stating it would be "highly unlikely" he would contribute anything beyond the minimum. Trump warned that under Mamdani's leadership, the city would have "zero chance of success, or even survival." Trump urged voters to support Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent. Cuomo previously served three terms as governor of New York but resigned in 2021 amid sexual assault allegations. Trump said, "Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job." During a recent mayoral debate, Mamdani faced questions regarding his comments about Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which have raised concerns among the Jewish community. In response, Mamdani stated, "I look forward to being a mayor for every single person that calls this city home," emphasizing his commitment to protecting and celebrating the Jewish community. He proposed increasing funding for hate crime prevention programs and incorporating education about Judaism into school curricula. Cuomo challenged Mamdani's statements, questioning his commitment to the Jewish community. He interrupted, saying, "Not everything is a TikTok video," and accused Mamdani of failing to denounce violent rhetoric against Jews. Cuomo highlighted that 650 rabbis had signed a letter opposing Mamdani's candidacy, a number that has since grown to over a thousand. The letter criticized Mamdani for allegedly delegitimizing the Jewish community and not condemning violent slogans or accusations against Israel. New York City is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, making the outcome of this election particularly significant for the community.
