FARMVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A man running for his first political office has defeated a three-term mayor in one Eastern Carolina town.
Alex Joyner overtook incumbent Mayor John Moore in Tuesday’s election to become Farmville’s new mayor, winning 710 votes to Moore’s 618 for 53% of the vote.
A crowd at Farmville Pizza erupted in cheers when the results were announced, celebrating Joyner’s victory over Moore, who was seeking his fourth term after six years in office.
“I don’t know if I have words to put to it right now. This has been a dream and something we have been fighting for months now,” Joyner said.
Moore thanked his supporters and reflected on his time in office as he prepares to exit.
