LANSING, MI -- Michigan may lose out on $30.4 million in federal grants due to “unlawful terms,” according to a lawsuit.

Michigan is joining 12 states in suing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security, among others, over the grant awards.

The federal government shortened the timeline of a $22.4 million Department of Homeland Security grant and an $8 million FEMA grant from three years to one year. The change requires all reimbursable activities funded by the grants be done in one year now rather than three.

“At best, it imposes significant obstacles,” the lawsuit said. “At worst, it makes the EMPG and HSGP funding largely unusable.”

The HSGP grant funds terrorism prevention, security in urban areas and strengthened border security.
