A 1% sales tax is coming to the three largest cities in Johnson County after voters resoundingly approved the revenue-generating measure at the ballot box.
Voters in Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty all separately approved a 1% local option sales tax (LOST) . It will take effect on July 1, 2026.
Residents of Coralville voted at the highest rate for the sales tax, with 3,217 voters (85%) approving the tax, according to preliminary results from the Iowa Secretary of State's Office . In Iowa City, 9,178 residents (84%) voted for the additional 1% sales tax, while 1,777 North Liberty voters (76.6%) gave the green light.
The tax will apply to over $2 billion in purchases made across the three cities each year. It is expected to generate more than $20 million in additional annual
