CHAPIN, S.C. — The Town of Chapin is entering a new chapter after voters apparently elected Bill Mitchell Jr. as the town’s next mayor in Tuesday’s election.

According to unofficial results, Mitchell won decisively with about 68% of the vote. His lone challenger received roughly 8%, while an unusually high number of voters, around 24%, wrote in names on their ballots, likely in response to Koon’s recent death.

The race came after the passing of longtime Mayor Al Koon earlier this fall. Koon had filed to run for re-election and his name still appeared on the ballot. However, election officials told News19 any votes cast for him would not have counted.
