POLK COUNTY, Iowa —

Cheers and applause filled Christopher’s Restaurant in Beaverdale Tuesday night, where supporters of Des Moines Public Schools' bond referendum campaign gathered to watch the results come in. The bond, one of the largest in Iowa history, needed 60% approval to pass.

It cleared that bar easily , marking a decisive victory for public education in the state’s largest school district.

“We have literally changed the trajectory for more than 30,000 kids and for generations to come , ” said Des Moines Public Schools Interim Superintendent Matt Smith, moments after results showed the district’s $265 million bond referendum passed with 74% of the vote, according to unofficial results.
