California voters approved new congressional maps in a special election Tuesday that could bring Democrats five more seats in the national battle for control of Congress, handing a victory to Gov. Gavin Newsom in his feud with President Donald Trump.
Proposition 50, a measure put on the ballot by state leaders in response to GOP-friendly redistricting approved by Texas lawmakers earlier this year, was leading comfortably with 64.7% of the vote after polls closed Tuesday, with 64.1% of precincts partially reporting. Millions more votes remain to be counted.
The race was called in the measure's favor by multiple outlets soon after polls closed at 8 p.m..
