Preliminary election results released Tuesday night show the majority of Vancouver voters support raising property taxes to hire more police officers.

The city of Vancouver’s Proposition 5 asked voters to approve a one-time property tax levy lid lift to fund the hiring of 13 Vancouver police officers.

On Tuesday, the proposition was passing by more than 14 percentage points, with 15,226 (57.23 percent) votes for and 11,378 (42.77 percent) votes against.

“We’re so excited about Prop. 5 going forward, and we can immediately start recruiting for those officers,” Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle said after the first batch of election results came in Tuesday. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the chief and his staff.”
