MESA, Ariz. — Mesa residents voted today to decide the fate of a city council seat.
Incumbent councilwoman Julie Spilsbury was subject to a recall election and faced off against fellow Republican Dorean Taylor. As of Tuesday evening, Taylor led in the polls with 52.78% of votes. Spilsbury had 47.22% of the votes.
The special election was held after petitions calling for a recall election that were circulated over the summer met the signature threshold, and the council unanimously approved the special election back in July.
Spilsbury's council colleague, Rich Adams—a conservative who doesn't always agree with Spilsbury—was blunt:
"She has been targeted with the intent to make an example of her for breaking political ranks—she didn't toe the line. That's what this is about," Adams said
