HERRIMAN — While national political debates continue to dominate headlines across the country, Utahns headed to the polls Tuesday to weigh in on something a little closer to home: municipal elections.

From police and fire services, to parks, roads and property taxes, these races often shape daily life for residents more directly than state or federal contests.

But, historically, municipal elections don’t always generate a big turnout.

In Herriman, city officials were concerned that might happen again this year, so the city’s communications team decided to try something a little different to get people’s attention: memes.

“We try to be relatable and fun on social media, just trying to get attention,” said Jonathan LaFollette, who is Herriman City’s communications manager.
