KINGSTON, N.Y. —Democrats delivered a series of stunning blows to incumbent Republican lawmakers, potentially picking up four seats on the Ulster County Legislature and tightening their already iron-clad grip on the board.
According to unofficial votes from the Ulster County Board of Elections, Democrats ousted three incumbent Republican lawmakers. In a fourth race that remains too close to call, a Democratic newcomer holds a slight, 36-vote lead over the incumbent Republican.
If the results hold, it will mean that Democrats will hold a 18-5 majority on the Legislature in January, more than enough to give Democrats a two-thirds supermajority on the board, which carries with it the ability to withstand some dissension from within its ranks and still pass legislation without Republican sup
