Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is facing legal trouble after a complaint was filed against him in the Kota Consumer Court regarding his endorsement of Rajshree Pan Masala. The complaint, lodged by Inder Mohan Singh Honey, a senior BJP leader and advocate at the Rajasthan High Court, alleges that the advertisements mislead consumers by claiming the product is 'saffron-infused'.
Honey pointed out that saffron is an expensive spice, costing around Rs 4 lakh per kilogram, making it unrealistic for a product priced at just Rs 5 to contain it. He argued that such misleading claims could encourage young people to consume pan masala, which is linked to serious health risks, including mouth cancer.
The Kota Consumer Court has issued notices to both Salman Khan and the manufacturer, Rajshree Pan Masala, requiring them to respond to the allegations by November 27. Honey emphasized the responsibility of celebrities in advertising, stating, "Celebrities or film stars in other countries don’t even promote cold drinks, but they are promoting tobacco and pan masala. I urge them not to spread the wrong message to the youth."
This case highlights ongoing concerns about celebrity endorsements of potentially harmful products. Salman Khan has previously endorsed Rajshree Elaichi, a cardamom product from the same company, which has raised questions about consumer confusion regarding the association between the two products.
The upcoming court hearing will further address these allegations and the implications of celebrity endorsements in the context of public health.
