Ellen Block won election to the Onondaga County Legislature’s 5th district on Tuesday with more than 56.39% of the vote.
Block, a Democrat, received 2,759 votes. Republican David Carnie received 2,134 votes.
The remaining 252 absentee ballots yet to be counted will not be enough to cover the difference.
Block gave a speech announcing her victory at the Democrats’ watch party.
“People want to feel more stability. Everything feels out of control right now,” Block said after declaring victory. “We can fix things at the local level, things we actually have power over, and people will see real results.”
Block will replace Republican legislator Debra Cody, who has held the seat since 2017, but did not seek re-election.
The 5th district includes North Syracuse and parts of Salina and DeWitt
