Everett voters turned a page on Tuesday.
A major upset in the race for mayor saw a sitting city councilor unseat embattled incumbent Carlo DeMaria, who has served as mayor for 18 consecutive years.
City Councilor Robert Van Campen, a labor and municipal attorney, won Tuesday’s election to become Everett’s new mayor, according to preliminary results. Serving 15 years in city government, he ran on a platform that contended Everett City Hall had “lost sight of who it serves.”
“I am running to bring real change, restore trust in City Hall, and make government work for every neighborhood,” he asserted on his campaign website . “It is time to fix school overcrowding, ease traffic, and make sure our neighborhoods, not just developers, benefit from Everett’s future.”
