More than 300 scholars from universities across the world have written to the Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar on Monday, urging him to intervene in what they call the “unjust and punitive dismissal” of Dr Snehashish Bhattacharya, Associate Professor of Economics at the South Asian University (SAU) in New Delhi. The Indian Express first reported in September that Bhattacharya was among four faculty members suspended in June 2023 for allegedly “inciting students against the interest of the university” during stipend protests the previous year.
His services were formally terminated on September 11 this year, with retrospective effect from June 2023.
