MADISON (WKOW) — Democratic lawmakers have introduced a series of bills they say will empower local governments.

Sen. Mark Spreitzer of Beloit highlighted the challenges cities and villages face, noting they have been asked to do more with fewer resources. To pay for that, many communities have turned to referendums, raising taxes and placing strain on community members.

Rep. Clinton Anderson of Beloit emphasized the need for local financial control.

"Give us the funding mechanisms that we need to control our own destiny. Give us the ability to make the policy choices we want to make. One size does not fit all, and what's good for Sheboygan might not be good for Eau Claire. What's good for Eau Claire might not be good for Milwaukee," said Anderson.
