2TRENTON, NJ – U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has been elected the 57th governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli in a decisive statewide victory that marks a historic moment in Garden State politics.

Sherrill, a former Navy pilot, federal prosecutor, and mother of four, captured 56.2 percent of the vote, earning 1,792,760 ballots cast in her favor—more than 414,000 votes ahead of Ciattarelli, who finished with 43.2 percent.

Her victory makes Sherrill the first Democratic woman ever elected governor of New Jersey.
