Washington — The Supreme Court is considering Wednesday whether President Trump can unilaterally impose tariffs on nearly every country under a federal emergency powers law, with the justices poised to test a centerpiece of his economic agenda and the limits of presidential powers. Some of the justices expressed skepticism about the government's arguments defending the tariffs.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued that the power to regulate imports includes the power to impose tariffs, but Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ketanji Brown Jackson and Amy Coney Barrett questioned him on this.
