Mikaela Mayer's move to junior middleweight proved to be a successful one as she thoroughly outclassed Mary Spencer to win a wide unanimous decision and capture the WBA, WBO and WBC 154-pound titles in Montreal last Thursday.
Although Spencer had a size advantage, Mayer played the role of attacker, utilizing constant pressure behind a jab and combination punching to pitch a near shutout (100-90, 98-92 and 98-22). Mayer still holds the WBO welterweight title and is now unified at junior middleweight. She has plenty of options for her next fight.
Mayer, ESPN's No. 2-ranked welterweight, climbs to the top of the junior middleweight rankings with her performance against Spencer, who falls to No. 5.
