A Camden police officer was shot on Tuesday evening, Oct. 4, authorities said.

At 10:50 p.m., a Camden County police officer was attempting to conduct a pedestrian stop with a man, Marques Jones, a 25-year-old Camden resident near Chesapeake Road and Congress Road in the Fairview section of Camden, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said.

Jones pointed a handgun at the officer and fired multiple gunshots, striking the officer in his left arm, authorities said.

After the officer was struck by gunfire, a sergeant returned fire and struck Jones once in the body, authorities said. After being struck by gunfire, Jones was placed under arrest, authorities said. 

Both the officer and Jones were transported to a nearby hospital, authorities said. The officer is in stable condition while Jones remains in critical condition, authorities said.

A handgun was recovered in the area where Jones was standing when the officer was shot, authorities said;

Jones is charged with attempted murder and additional offenses, authorities said.

The investigation into the shooting of the officer is being overseen by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit. The investigation into the police-involved shooting is being overseen by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit with guidance from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
