An interstellar comet is accelerating as it travels through our solar system, moving away from the sun and closer to Earth. NASA has identified comet 3I/ATLAS as the third known object from outside our solar system to be discovered in this region. NASA's missions are collaborating to monitor and study this rare interstellar comet as it makes its journey. The comet reached its closest point to the sun on October 29th, after which its speed increased to approximately 152,000 miles per hour. Initially, when it was first detected, it was travelling at a speed of about 137,000 miles per hour. 3I/ATLAS originated in another star system and was ejected into interstellar space, where it has drifted for millions, or even billions, of years before entering our solar system. The exact size of the comet remains uncertain. However, observations from the Hubble Space Telescope in August indicated that the diameter of its nucleus ranges between 440 metres and 5.6 kilometres. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
