MARIETTA, Ga. — Marietta Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin appears set to remain in office, with unofficial totals from Tuesday night's election showing him holding off his 24-year-old challenger by a little fewer than 100 votes.

The tight race in Marietta pitted Tumlin, a 78-year-old four-term mayor with a background in state Republican politics (officially, municipal races in Georgia are nonpartisan) against 24-year-old Sam Foster, a progressive organizer who galvanized strong support in an election cycle that tilted toward Democrats in Georgia .

The fully reported unofficial results as of around 7 a.m. Wednesday showed Mayor Tumlin with 51.01% of the vote to Foster's 48.99% -- in raw vote totals, 6,762 votes to Foster's 6,675, a difference of 87 votes. Credit: City of Marietta
