LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and a coalition of 19 other attorneys general have secured a permanent court order blocking a Trump Administration policy that sought to pressure states into enforcing federal immigration laws by threatening to withhold billions of dollars in transportation funding.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island ruled that the U.S. Department of Transportation acted unlawfully when it tried to require states to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to receive funding.

The judge struck down the rule from all federal transportation grant agreements and banned the department from enforcing it in the future.

This decision makes permanent an earlier temporary order issued in May .
