Voters in New Jersey, New York City, California and Virginia sent a clear message to President Donald Trump through sweeping Democratic victories on Election Night, according to the Associated Press Voter Poll .

The poll , which surveyed more than 17,000 voters across those states, revealed that the majority of voters had made a choice as they cast their ballots Tuesday night: vote as a direct way to combat Trump or consider him as an insignificant factor.

According to the poll, few came out to the ballot box to support Trump, and more wanted to oppose him. Around 4 in 10 voters in New Jersey and Virginia said their opposition to Trump influenced their votes for governor, where Democrats Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger quickly emerged victorious.
