More Detroiters turned out on Nov. 4 than in any municipal election since 2013.
Some 115,518 voters cast ballots in this year's general election, sweeping Detroit City Council Mary Sheffield into the mayor's office , and into the history books as the first woman elected to lead the city.
That's 22% of registered voters. But the number of registered voters fluctuates as state-set voter registration policy changes. For a consistent measure of turnout over time, the Free Press compared the number of ballots cast to the city’s voting age population, tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau ― by that measure, 23.5% of voting age Detroiters voted in this year's election.
