The president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has come up with what The Daily Beast describes as soccer's version of the Nobel Peace Prize, to placate pal and President Donald Trump, who was snubbed for the "real thing."
FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced that the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize — Football Unites the World” will be presented during the World Cup Final Draw at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 5, which Trump is expected to attend, USA Today reports.
“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognize the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace,” Infantino said in statement.
The soccer boss said the award “will recognize the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations.”
This Wednesday announcement came before Infantino was slated to appear at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, where both Trump and Argentine World Cup champion Lionel Messi were listed as speakers at the event.
Though the recipient of the new prize has yet to be announced, "Trump's reaction to not winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize might give some indication about how he might respond" if he is again snubbed by this one, the Daily Beast notes.
After being passed over for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina MachadoMaría Corina Machado, Trump and his White House issued a furious response, claiming the Nobel Committee "place[s] politics over peace".
Trump also complained that his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, received the award in 2009 for what he said amounted to "doing nothing."
