The Pittsburgh Public School Board will see a major shift in members following Tuesday’s election, a change that comes as directors are considering a controversial school closure plan.

Five directors were elected to the board Tuesday, including newcomers Tawana Cook Purnell, Erikka Grayson and Eva Diodati along with incumbents Tracey Reed and Gene Walker.

Their election comes as the board is gearing up to vote as early as this month on a plan that would shutter nine school buildings and change grade structures at several others. The new board members will be sworn in next month.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming our three new Directors and continuing the important work of building our Future Ready School District for our families,” Mr. Walker said in a text message.
