A speeding 85-year-old driver was killed Tuesday afternoon in Hackensack after he crashed his car into a tree, authorities said.
The man was driving downhill on Marvin Avenue at a “high rate of speed” when he failed to stop at a stop sign, crossed the four lanes of Polifly Road and struck a tree head-on, Hackensack police said.
A 30-year-old woman driving north on Polifly Road tried to avoid hitting the man’s car but rear-ended it. She was not injured.
The man died of his injuries at an area hospital after firefighters extricated him from his car following the 1:48 p.m. crash.
Police didn’t immediately identify the man except to say he was a Hackensack resident.
