Michigan has apparently put the kibosh on plans to play its season-opener abroad in 2026.

The Wolverines' matchup against Western Michigan was originally scheduled to be played in Frankfurt, Germany, in Week 0, but the school announced that the game — which was scheduled for Aug. 29, 2026 — will now be played at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. It will also be moved to Sept. 5 as part of Week 1.

In a statement, athletics director Warde Manuel cited logistical issues with playing an international game.

"We did a thorough and exhaustive evaluation in relation to playing an international game," Manuel said. "Based on the analysis of all the factors, we felt it was best to keep the game in Ann Arbor as it was originally scheduled for the 2026 season. I want to thank Eintracht Frankfurt and their Stadium Management company for all the work that they did in partnership with our staff to try to make this game a possibility."

There are still two games scheduled to be played across the Atlantic in 2026, with North Carolina and TCU opening the season in the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland, which is also scheduled for Aug. 29 in Week 0. Arizona State and Kansas are also currently scheduled to square off in a Big 12 conference game in London on Sept. 19.
