US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he wants New York to be successful and suggested he might offer limited federal assistance to Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist elected this week as New York City’s mayor.

“We’ll help him, a little bit maybe,” Trump said during remarks at an economic conference in Miami, a day after Mamdani’s victory. “We want New York to be successful. We’ll help them.”

The comments marked Trump’s first direct acknowledgment of Mamdani’s historic win, coming just days after he warned that a Mamdani-led New York could face reduced federal funding “other than the very minimum as required.”
