STATEWIDE -- Question 2 in this year's referendum election passed by a large margin. While supporters say this will help prevent gun violence in Maine, opponents argue it now puts law enforcement officers in potentially dangerous situations.
The Associated Press says over 300,000 Mainers voted to pass Question 2 on this year's ballot, which will institute a "red flag" gun law in the state. The citizen initiative passed by an approximate 25% margin, according to AP polling numbers.
The new law gives families and law enforcement the ability to go directly to a court when someone is in crisis, and if a court deems them dangerous, it may temporarily restrict their access to deadly weapons.
