ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia lawmakers are trying to find the root cause of high chronic absenteeism rates in the state and ways to fix it.
Right now, one in five Georgia students routinely miss class.
Both the Georgia House and the Senate currently have study committees looking at the root causes of why children are repeatedly missing school in Georgia, from transportation issues, mental health struggles to unstable housing.
The House Study Committee on Student Attendance in PreK-12 Education met for the final time Wednesday before taking recommendations to the state.
“We obviously have an issue we need to address. I think we’re out there addressing it, but I think there are some efforts to address it better,” said Committee Chair Rep. Chris Erwin, R-Homer.
