AUSTIN (KXAN) — Voters in Austin overwhelmingly rejected Prop Q Tuesday — a proposed tax rate hike that some city leaders said would pay for "core services" including parks, public safety programs, public health and tackling homelessness.

Almost 172,000 people cast a ballot, with about 63.5% voting against the proposition.

Of the 234 precincts in which at least one vote was cast, Prop Q failed in 194. The proposition saw a majority of support in 40 precincts.
