TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — For yet another year, Rep. Fiona McFarland, R-Sarasota, is looking to make it easier for people to recover damages from the state or local governments.

But just like in years past, critics are warning of possible implications on the local level, hoping for some sort of balance.

"I agree there should be a balance between government liability and victims' rights, but this ain't it. Today, the current law is not a balance," McFarland said.

In an effort to strengthen fairness and accountability, HB 145 aims to increase the state's liability limits from the existing $200,000 per person and $300,000 per incident to $500,000 per person and $1 million per incident, allowing for higher payouts when someone successfully sues the government.
