LAS VEGAS ( FOX5 ) — The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration will perform radiation detection flights over the Las Vegas Strip ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix event.
The NNSA will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights over the Strip starting on Nov. 6, to prepare for the annual F1 race, according to a post on social media .
In previous years, officials said the Nuclear Emergency Support Team aircraft were used to measure expected background radiation as part of standard safety measures to protect public health during events.
The department said the surveys were important preparations for the upcoming event.
